By Diane SilverNot funny says Warner/Chappel Music Inc about a recent YouTube parody by the Fred Phelps clan. The company administers the copyright for "We Are the World." The Phelps family twisted that uplifting tune into a not-funny parody condemning the world. (And no, I'm not linking to it.)
Even though I agree with Warner/Chappel's disgust at the Phelps parody, I don't think the company can win this fight. As I understand it, and I am no expert, the law on parody allows anyone to use a well-known tune in this way.
I will be very happy if someone tells me I'm wrong.
