Kansas: Remember to vote on Tuesday

[Updated 10:13 a.m. with new link]

By Diane Silver

In some ways municapal primaries have got to be the most boring election days of all. Almost no one knows the candidates' names and the stakes appear on the surface to be low.

The truth, though, is that city elections can have the most direct impact on your life. If the candidate who supports your views on everything from social policy to city streets doesn't make it past the primary then you've got problems in your own neighborhood.

This is particularly true this year for lesbians and gays in Lawrence where members of the City Commission are up for a vote. If you are registered, please join me in voting tomorrow. Limit your votes to the three candidates endorsed by the Kansas Equality PAC. I think you can vote for more commission candidates, but if you do you run the risk of diluting the impact of your vote.

The endorsed candidates are:
  • Carey Maynard-Moody
  • David Schauner
  • Boog Highberger
Developers are making a huge push to elect a more conservative commission. Don't let them take control.

For more details on the election, check out my earlier post.

Mike Silverman has a nice overview of the Lawrence City Commission race and links to some useful material from the Lawrence Journal-World. Thanks Mike!

Kansas Equality PAC endorses three candidates for Lawrence City Commission

By Diane Silver

On the recommendation of its Lawrence members, Kansas Equality PAC has endorsed candidates for the upcoming City Commission election. The endorsed candidates are:
  • Carey Maynard-Moody
  • David Schauner
  • Boog Highberger
The Feb. 27 primary and April 3 general election are particularly important for Lawrence voters who want fairness for local lesbian and gay families.

The new commissioners will probably be the ones who decide on the proposed domestic partner registry. Although merely a list of names, the registry will help both same-sex and heterosexual partners access health insurance and other benefits from some employers.

It's important for anyone who believes in fairness to support and vote for Maynard-Moody, Schauner and Highberger.

Here are some key dates in the upcoming election. By the way, advance voting has already begun.
