Kansas: Domestic partner ban may be voted out of committee this afternoon

By Diane Silver

I made it Florida. It's 80 degrees and sunny, and it's good to see family and friends. I just wish it were for another reason.

In checking my email, though, I found a tip reporting that the House Federal and State Affairs Committee will be working the bill banning domestic partner registries in all of Kansas. This is bad law both for couples and for cities and counties. Pushed by Rep. Lance Kinzer, R-Olathe, this legislation steps right into home rule authority. It is also a preemptive strike designed to keep the Lawrence City Commission from passing a registry.

If you're in Topeka, get over to the Statehouse now! The committee meets at 1:30 pm in the old Supreme Court room on the third floor.
