Today's Reads: The Supreme Court has become what conservatives "long yearned for"

By Diane Silver

Linda Greenhouse at the New York Times has a lengthy analysis of how the new Roberts Supreme Court has moved to the right and given conservatives their dream come true.

Meanwhile, University of Chicago Law Professor Geoffrey R. Stone takes the court to task for what he says is its "intellectual dishonesty."

Stanford Law Professor Pamela S. Karlan declares that recent Supreme Court decisions have more to do with politics than law.

And then, of course, there's our very own Nancy Jane Moore who talks about the scariest words in law today: "Five to Four."

Don't Ask, Don't Tell is as awful as "separate but equal"

By Diane Silver

Geoffrey R. Stone writes in the Chicago Tribune:
"Don't ask, don't tell" is not a policy that reflects true American values. Like "separate but equal," it is at best a transitional compromise with bigotry. Perhaps, for a time, it was a necessary evil. But by failing now to condemn that policy, the GOP presidential candidates have shamed themselves, their party and their nation.
Stone is a professor of law at the University of Chicago and the author of War and Liberty: An American Dilemma: 1790 to the Present.
