There's a great column over at The Washington Post today where Harold Meyerson contemplates recent comments by Gen. Peter Pace and a Baptist leader and what he calls "The God of Double Standards."
Here's a tiny bit:
How to reconcile a God who creates homosexuals with a God who condemns practicing homosexuals to hell? A mysterious God may be well and good, but a capricious or contradictory God can inspire so much doubt that He threatens the credibility of the entire religious enterprise.Actually, you can't reconcile that, which is why the small mindedness of the religious right is probably the biggest threat to religion in the world today. Their efforts not only turn people off from religion, and especially Christianity, but they undermine the entire idea of a loving faith.
By the way, that Baptist leader is the Rev. R. Albert Mohler Jr., president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville. Apparently, he thinks abortion is a bad idea, but he wants to "fix" us all in the womb so we come out straight. Ahhhh, the joys of bigotry.
OK, enough of this blogging stuff for the moment. I have to go off and do some income-producing work.
