The end of a homophobic era in women's basketball

By Diane Silver

That sound you hear is cheering over the resignation of homophobic Penn State women's basketball coach Rene Portland. She resigned last week while I was gone.

The latest sports columnist to add his shouts of joy to the chorus is Mike Seate of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
So whether gay, lesbian or straight, this is a victory -- and not just for college basketball players. Schools that condone discrimination are losers, regardless of the point total on the scoreboard.
Other comments have come from Walt Moody at CentreDaily.com , David Jones of The Patriot-News and, of course, the best women's basketball columnist of all, Mechelle Voepel at ESPN.

I wrote about Portland here.
