I've noticed that in some very crowded societies they've started running women-only subways so that women aren't crammed in with the men -- of course, this is partly because some men take advantage of the crowding to cop a feel.
Attitudes about distance and touching can change: After years of Aikido, I am much more likely to gently touch my friends if I want to get past them. As I frequently explain to students, Aikido is a very friendly martial art and you have to be willing to touch bodies with your partner. But I don't want to be that close to someone I don't know and, since I get stiff easily, I always want room to shift my position without bothering someone else.
I just suspect everyone would find it easier to maintain a comfortable distance if we had about half as many people in the world!Nancy Jane Moorehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01030267999537291250noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28633811.post-1163825987160547702006-11-17T22:59:00.000-06:002006-11-17T22:59:00.000-06:00Nancy -- Needing to have a 2-foot circle around ou...Nancy --
Needing to have a 2-foot circle around ourselves which we term
"our space" is normal for many Northern European cultures; but, is especially peculiar to the USA. Many other cultures live in close proximity to each other and don't require that distance. They expect to live and some need to live that close to each other. In fact, in some of these cultures, when people are discussing issues they want to be close enough to feel each other's breath. Just an aside on your comments.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28633811.post-1163816965110841962006-11-17T20:29:00.000-06:002006-11-17T20:29:00.000-06:00Glad to have you visit.
